Learn the Difference between Addicted to VS Devoted to

On this page, I will like us to look through another set of verbs used confusedly by learners and users of English. It is evident that people confuse these two words; that is the motive behind the write-up. Scroll down to learn!

Addicted to/devoted to – the two words are used in expressions that mean that something has become someone’s habit. 

However, there is a slight misconception in the use of the two phrases. HOW?

One is addicted to something that brings shame or something illegal or something that is out of good manners, e.g. someone may be addicted to drugs (or any other undesirable pleasure),  such as in:

• The notorious hired assassins are addicted to killing
• Those hoodlums in our street are addicted to smoking of hemp and stealing 
• "I'll send you this video game I'm addicted to", Julet offered.
• He never seems to have been addicted to any manly sport, and took little exercise.
• From his earliest years Philip showed himself more addicted to the desk than the saddle and to the pen than to the sword.

However, one is devoted to something or someone that has no intention of reproach or losing one’s good manners, e.g. someone can be devoted to God (or every other good things like prayer or an event), such as in:

• My pastors encouraged those who are devoted to God not to weary, for in due time help will come. 
• Most of our teachers are devoted to making things happen
• No one could deny that Alex was a devoted husband and father.
• His life was devoted to the study of higher geometry and reforming the more advanced mathematical teaching of Italy.
• The hour from twelve to one is devoted to the learning of new words.
